Chapter Sixteen
Rachel
Watching Noah fall will haunt me for the rest of my life. His arms windmilling as his wide eyes searched for a solution. My heart stopped as he dropped away from me then that God-awful sound of him hitting the rocks below.
My world froze as I fought to stop from losing every bit of control. Noah, my Noah lay in a heap at the bottom of the cliff. No, this was impossible. I desperately searched for any sign of life. A movement, anything that would allow me to continue to exist.
âNOAH,â I yelled down to him, hoping for some response. But nothing. No, I couldnât take this any longer, springing up I raced along the cliff top until I found a small cut that would allow me down.
The sand gave out from beneath me as I raced down, making me fall on my butt. But I was up and running down out of control until I made it to the bottom. Rushing along the creek I came to Noah and slammed to a stop.
He was lying on his back, his head twisted away, between two large boulders. Holding my breath I waited and watched his chest. Praying for movement, anything that let me know he was still alive.
And then, my prayers were answered when I saw his chest expand as he took a breath.
âNoah,â I whispered as I rushed to his side, unable to believe he still lived. Dropping to my knees I held my fingers to his neck and felt a strong pulse. Looking up to say thank you, I saw the rock I stood on above us and shivered. I would have died. There was no doubt in my mind. Noah had sacrificed himself to save me.
My heart melted as I began to examine him. A nasty bump on the back of his head had me worried but there wasnât a lot of blood. His right leg was askew but not too much. Then bile rose in my throat when I saw the white bone sticking out of his wrist.
I could see where heâd landed, his wrist had been caught between two boulders and twisted apart. I donât know if the bone had torn through the skin or if the skin and been pulled apart before the bone broke. And really it didnât matter.
Turning away, I fought to hold my breakfast down as I hyperventilated. Oh my God. So gross, my heart stopped for a moment as I stared at his injury. Unable to believe what I was seeing.
His wrist had flopped to the side, it barely hung together on a thick piece of muscle and skin. At that moment, Isobel and Amanda rushed up behind me. Amanda screamed when she saw his broken arm. Isobel cursed under her breath.
Blood continued to ooze from the torn flesh. âGive me your scarf,â I yelled at Isobel then holding my breath I forced myself to push the two pieces together and wrap them with the scarf, pulling it as tight as possible.
